Ocho Rios is not the capital of Jamaica, and it is not the most popular tourist destination in the country, but it is for sure one of the best places to visit if you want to experience the real Jamaica. Tasting the local food, meeting the nice and chill people, and exploring nature, far away from the pampered beach resort, are some of the few reasons you want to visit this beautiful place. Ocho Rios weather offers sun, light breeze, and sometimes cloudy sky, but you will enjoy the beautiful Ocho Rios beaches.
The newly built fishing village and pier won an engineering award.
Ocho Rios is a port town that is located on the north coast of Jamaica. From a small fishing village, the city has turned into a busy and developing place with a newly built cruise ship harbor, beautiful beach strip with hotels and resorts, souvenir shops, restaurants, and many natural attractions in the area. No matter how long you are planning to stay in town, you are going to find plenty of attractions and activities to enjoy, including chilling on the beach with a drink and a joint. 😊
Bob Marley’s birthplace and burial place are located in the town St. Ann, located not too far from Ocho Rios.
I have visited this beautiful place a few times, as I used to work on a cruise ship for a while, and we were visiting this paradise at least twice a month. I loved Ocho Rios beaches, very nice clean and it was always a good way to unwind and chill on the beach. What I like is that you can still enjoy one of the many beautiful and luxurious resorts, but yet there are so many other things to do. I had my Jamaican meal in a small restaurant, had a beer, and just felt good to be there. I like trying new foods and I have found this Jamaica Mistake sauce that I tried and now used on everything, starting from salads, sandwiches, roasted meat, etc.
Walking around and talking to the locals, who are friendly and welcoming, taking pictures of the colorful buildings, or exploring the natural side of the island, those are the things you will experience coming to Ocho Rios.
Ocho Rios is known as the capital of adventure, with the highest number of attractions per square mile.
Ocho Rios Jamaica Attractions
Dunn’s River Falls is a famous waterfall located near the town, and it is one of the main attractions that receives thousands of visitors every year. The waterfall is a preferred attraction for many romantic vacationers, and people staying in other parts of the country travel to visit and enjoy the beautiful nature. You will be accompanied by an experienced guide, climbing the slippery limestone-tiered waterfall. If you are looking for more than laying on the beautiful Ocho Rios beaches, and you want some adventures, then you should definitely go for Dunn’s River Falls.
Dunn’s River Falls Tour is the most popular tourist attraction among the visitors.
Dolphin Cove is another attraction in the area that you don’t want to miss. You can swim and interact with sharks, dolphins, and stingrays. If you travel with kids, make sure to include this place to your list as the small ones can play with iguanas, birds, small decorative snakes, and other marine creatures in the Jungle Trail Walk.
For water sports lovers, there are scuba diving, snorkeling, exploring the debris of the White River on a bamboo boat, or swimming with dolphins. Coyoba River Garden and Museum is another beautiful place that offers a real scenic and historical treat filled with tropical gardens, ponds, and waterfalls. The museum shows authentic Jamaican artifacts and a touch to the local culture.
If you like collecting souvenirs and hand made stuff, you have to go to the open market and shops. Offering a variety of clothing, souvenirs, paintings, even fruits, you will be surprised what you can find there. While the market offers a variety of items, it is not very cheap, but also not too expensive. It is considered a safe place, but as you will be walking around, possibly with other people, it is better if you leave your valuable items at the hotel.
For the nightlife lovers, there are nightclubs, bars, and a small cinema, and even though nature will surround you, you can still enjoy yourself at night. St Ann is a small town located not far away from Ocho Rios, and it is the birthplace and the burial place of Bob Marley, I haven’t had the chance to visit and explore more, but if you have time, make sure you include the place in your travel bucket list.
If you want to visit the attractions on your own, it will be better if you rent a car which you can pick up at the airport and return there on your way home. I know some hotels offer an airport shuttle bus for free and they can organize your transportation to the many attractions Ocho Rios has to offer but if you feel more comfortable driving around, go for it.
Ocho Rios Weather
Since the town welcomes many visitors who are cruising, during the week, it might get crowded as there are organized tours by the cruise lines, so plan accordingly. The best time to visit Ocho Rios is during the winter season, which is from December to February. Still, if you don’t like crowds, you can consider visiting during the fall, September to November or in the spring, March to May. Ocho Rios Weather is normally sunny, partly cloudy and sometimes light showers, but it is definitely a place you want to visit for your suntanning.
Did you know that Ocho Rios translated from Spanish means Eight Rivers, but there are only four existing?
Ocho Rios offers accommodation for the luxury traveler, but also to the budget traveler, and as I like to say, why break the budget if you can travel on a budget and get the luxury experience at the same time. For reasonable price accommodation, you can check Hotels.com as they offer a variety of hotels, a list of attractions, and a lot more. They also have a rewards program offering a free 1-night stay for every ten nights you book with them. For the luxury traveler, I would recommend Jamaica Inn, and for the budget travelers, I would suggest Chrisanns Beach Resort. If you travel with friends, you might check out renting a whole villa as that will be cheaper, and you will have the privacy you want sipping cocktails on your own pool.
There are many options on how to travel when in Ocho Rios. The easiest is to rent a car from the airport; you can request a private transfer from your hotel or get a taxi. If you are visiting Ocho Rios because of the beach and you are the type of person that prefers to stay at the pool or swim on the beach, then you should check for a resort on the beach, that can offer you everything you need. In that case, you might not need to rent a car to worry about transportation.
Research, research, and research! Make sure you save that extra bucks.
